In the weaving world, there are two main approaches to finishing techniques: finishing by hand and machine-stitching handwoven projects. The May/June 2017 issue of Handwoven celebrates the patient and sometimes slow work of hand-finishing techniques.

Inside, you’ll find nine stunning projects that cover finishing techniques from fringe and braids, to knotting and adding beads. In some cases, a combination of techniques creates a beautiful and complex finish. Tom Knisely uses a Triple Finish on his rug, which incorporates a Damascus edge with a V-shaped braid and is then finished off with a 3-strand braid. Deborah Jarchow’s shawl combines decorative stitching and a bound fringe. Nancy Dunlap wove beads directly into her scarf, then added Mexican braided fringe and a few more beads to finish.

Whether you only finish projects by hand or hardly ever finish projects by hand, you’ll find the finishing explorations in this issue interesting and compelling. They may even convert you to the peaceful world of hand-finishing.
