Spinning Garneted Fibers Video Download

You may have heard of tweed yarn, but have you heard of garneted yarn? If you love to play with color and texture, you need this recycled-fiber technique in your spinner’s toolbox! Learn to process short pieces of yarn and luxury “waste” fibers into blending elements that can be carded with base fibers. You can then spin these blends in a range of yarn styles with delightful flecks of color and texture. Plus, because of the longer length of the fiber flecks, this yarn is more stable for knitting and weaving, making it a great technique to add to your skillset. 

In this mini-course, Angela K. Schneider shares her favorite method for creating garneted yarns. As you begin, you’ll learn which fiber options work best, move on to preparation and spinning, and finish with inspiration for the types of yarns you can create.

Supplies and equipment:

• Scrap yarn or fibers to use as add-ins
• Base fiber, such as fleece, wool roving, or cotton sliver
• Handcards
• Spinning wheel or spindle
• Scissors
• Cleaning brush for handcards (optional but recommended)

Prerequisites:

To learn this technique, you need only basic spinning skills and the ability to make a one- or two-ply yarn.
