During Jane Austen's time, less fortunate men and women knitted socks and gloves for income. These items could be found in village shops, where I imagine Catherine Morland purchasing a pair for Henry Tilney before traveling by carriage to Northanger Abbey. These finely knitted gloves allow for handling the reins, while the chevron outer mitt provides extra cushioning and warmth.Finished Size: Gloves: 8 1/2" hand circumference and 10 1/2" long from bottom of cuff to tip of fingers. Outer mitts: 83/4" circumference.
Yarn: Austermann Step Classic (75% superwash wool, 25% nylon; 460 yd [421 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]): #1002 brown (MC), #1000 cream (CC), 1 skein each. Yarn distributed by Skacel.
Needles: Gloves—size 1 (2.25 mm): set of 4 double-pointed (dpn). Outer mitts—size 2 (2.75 mm): set of 4 dpn. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
Notions: Markers (m); safety pin; tapestry needle; waste yarn.
Gauge: 32 sts and 46 rnds = 4" in St st with smaller needles; 32 sts and 36 rnds = 4" in charted patt with larger needles.
