Called eldpung in Swedish, fire or tinder pouches were used to carry a steel or striker, a bit of flint, and some material such as wood shavings or dried moss with which to start a fire. Fires were built at noon during the summer pasture season and having the means to start a fire was necessary. A tinder pouch was used while traveling or working away from home and would have been carried in a pocket, to be handy when needed. The pouches were usually made of leather, so these knitted pouches were special.
