As the oldest daughter of nine children in a family of little means, Fanny Price may well have been a knitter. In considering Mansfield Park, it is easy to imagine Fanny knitting Edmund a Bible cover as a gift for his ordination, a gift of support as he struggled with his vows and conflict over feelings for Miss Crawford. As a further reminder of their enduring friendship, the book cover features a ribbed horseshoe cable, reflecting the gratitude Fanny had for Edmund's help in overcoming her fear of horses. This resizable book cover can serve the modern knitter as a cover for an Austen novel or a well loved journal, a possession treasured by many an Austen heroine.
