Rosepath Rug

by Lynn Stracka Schuster

4-Shaft Project

This richly colored boundweave rug woven on rosepath threading was inspired by an article on Scandinavian rugs in the May/June 1987 issue of Handwoven. Graph paper is a wonderful tool for designing color patterns without wasting yam. Lynn groups her color choices by value (their darkness
or lightness); having several colors of similar value level unites them into a group that can be treated as one color. She chooses about eight colors in three value groups, starting perhaps with four darkvalue colors, adding three medium-value colors for depth, and finishing with a single light-value color to add punch. Then Lynn adds contrast to set off the pattern; she balances the contrast—like balancing excitement with quiet or solitude with sociability. To showcase a color, it is used sparingly and is bordered with contrasting colors.
