Discover 80 vintage crochet patterns with the Weldon’s Practical Crochet: Ninth-Twelfth Series eBook!

PieceWork magazine is pleased to present this exact reproduction (neither alterations nor corrections were made to the original published in 1889) of Weldon’s Practical Crochet. It is a fitting example of needlework and history, hand in hand. This electronic pattern book opens a window on another time and another place. The time is the late nineteenth century and the place is London, England. Needleworkers of that era would be amazed to see their favorite crochet patterns in a virtual format of which they could never have dreamed.

In an effort to bring needlework to the emerging middle class, Weldon’s, a paper pattern producer of the Victorian era, began to publish monthly newsletters devoted to various crafts (beading, knitting, crochet, patchwork, and the like). These newsletters were typically 14 pages and cost 2 pence. Later, they were collected into book form, titled Weldon’s Practical Needlework. The Twelfth series was included in Volumes 4 and 5.

We have reproduced for you here the crochet material from the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Series.

Weldon's Practical Crochet: Ninth Series

The 28 projects range from simple to ornate and include a variety of antimacassars (the “Antis” in the subtitle), a sweet muff for a child, the elegant Derwent Border for “dress trimmings, collars . . . and cuffs,” the stylish Lady’s Jacket, and the very elaborate Infant’s Hood.

Weldon's Practical Crochet: Tenth Series

The 17 projects range from simple to ornate and include an elaborate doll’s walking costume, doilies with lace borders, a sweet frock for a little girl, an intriguing gentleman’s mitten, and squares for quilts.

Weldon's Practical Crochet: Eleventh Series

The 19 projects range from simple to ornate and include a doily edged with Venetian lace, a child’s pretty dress, a delightful toboggan cap, and a raised-square pattern for a quilt.

Weldon's Practical Crochet: Twelfth Series

The 16 vintage crochet patterns range from simple to ornate and include shawl crochet patterns, baby crochet patterns, crochet jacket patterns and more. Create  a lady’s fleecy petticoat, a child’s slipper, a shawl worked in half-crazy stitch, and the intriguing couvre-pied.

This electronic book serves as a curiosity, an inspiration, a resource, and a link to a time beyond our memories. In using and enjoying it, you keep the craft alive.
